Welcome, new member of the Society to Save Slap and Tickle!
The Society to Save Slap and Tickle Promise:
On my honor I promise that—
I will treat Earth like we are on a first date, every day.
I will do my best to protect sexual diversity as a form of biodiversity, whatever it costs me.
I will savor Earth's eroticism and conserve (critically endangered) kink lords!
This is the Society's salute.
What do members of the Society to Save Slap and Tickle DO?!
Bawdy Book Club
Read the book with your pod, alongside a fun reading guide! If you preorder 10+ copies for the club and submit that information, I'll join your club over Zoom to give a round of light spanks. Use the contact form to send me your preorder info!
Conserve Kink Lords
Choose your favorite animal from Poking the Squid and do something every day, week or month to support their sex lives. They need our help getting laid light right about now!
Book Club Meeting Guide
Introductions- pronouns, land acknowledgement, and name your favorite animal (and why) in one sentence!
Group Agreements are up to each group to decide for themselves, but as this is a book about sex, and the conversation might touch on our own relationships to sexuality, gender, and identity, I suggest getting clear on confidentiality at the top, and establishing early what kind of feedback members do or don't want to receive from each other at group level. Sharing space, listening, courageously changing our minds, and managing repair are all helpful things to consider when establishing group norms before you begin talking about SEX!
Reading Guide
These suggested questions can be applied to each section and/or can be used in one conversation about the book overall. Try to make sure every member has a chance to respond to the question(s) you select.
Do you have a new animal hero? Which animal sex lives made you feel seen?
What insights about animal sex challenge your thinking? What fact repelled you? Why do you think that is?
What can animal sex teach us?
What did you learn about the process of how science gets made?
How do you think our norms and assumptions do or do not shape how we see animals?
As you learned about how theorists and scientists study animal sex, what ideas, language and stories do you want to unlearn, or embrace?
When is it useful to relate to animals in order to center humans less in planetary relationship, and when is it risky to "naturalize" behaviors in a "culture wars" context?
How do you want to be of use to animal thriving? Are there examples of people or groups advocating for animals that excite you? Consider conserving kink lords!
Conserve Kink Lords
I hope you have developed some personal investment in the fate of at least one of the species discussed in Poking the Squid. I know I have! Here are just a few resources for supporting those animals (and their enduring ability to get it on); please be in touch with me if you have suggestions for more! And please report back on what you did to support your favorite critter flying their freak flags.
Albatross
Friends of Midway Atoll, or the Pacific Seabird Group, where Lindsay Young is a scientist. Also find a local beach cleanup!
Female Birds
Participate in female bird day! or support the Galbatross Project
Seahorse
Prairie Voles
The Nature Conservancy's Great Plains Grasslands project. If sage grouse are safe, so is vole habitat.
Marine Mammals
Waterfowl/Ducks
I love Ducks Unlimited; National Audubon Society; and American Bird Conservancy. Honestly, you could join or support ANY of the State of the Birds report partners and I'd be happy about it!
Insects
Turn your lawn into a meadow, (the 2025 State of the Birds report also indicates that what private landowners do to support migratory birds will matter more and more) or support The Xerces Society or volunteer with The Nature Conservancy
Barnacles
Barnacles aren't often thought of as in need of any help, but ocean acidification will endanger all crustaceans! Learn more about ocean acidification and what you can do, or volunteer at places like the Billion Oyster Project.
Squid
Squid are an important foraging species for animals like albatross. support sea shepherd to stop overfishing worldwide. And only eat fish that Seafood Watch approves!
Amphibians
Primates
Anglerfish
Stop deep sea mining! It takes many many years for deep sea ecosystems to recover from mining. We know more about the moon than our oceans, yet we're going to trash these fragile ecosystems?! No!
